Mycotoxin control in food and feed is a key aspect of food safety. The European Commission has recently updated the applicable regulations with the publication of Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/2782, introducing significant improvements in sampling and analysis methods for mycotoxins.
This new regulation repeals Regulation (EC) No 401/2006, which had been in force since 2006, due to the need to incorporate technological and scientific advancements in the field of mycotoxins analysis in food.
What Changes with Regulation (EU) 2023/2782?
The new regulatory framework introduces:
· Greater precision and updated methodologies, ensuring more reliable results.
· Flexibility in the selection of analytical techniques, allowing the use of more advanced methodologies.
· Higher specificity in mycotoxin detection, reducing uncertainty in results.
· Enhanced interlaboratory cooperation, promoting the harmonization of analytical methods.
The Spanish National Accreditation Body (ENAC) has set a deadline until 2029 for analytical laboratories to adapt their methodologies to this new regulation.
The Importance of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs)
To comply with the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2023/2782, laboratories will need to re-evaluate their validation processes and ensure the reliability of their results using Certified Reference Materials (CRMs).
CRMs play a crucial role in instrument calibration, method validation, and quality control, ensuring that analytical results are accurate, reproducible, and internationally traceable.
At Cifga, as a reference material producer accredited by ENAC (accreditation 02/PMR003), we provide high-quality mycotoxin CRMs to support this transition (many of our products are included in the technical annex of the ISO 17034 accreditation).
We develop Certified Reference Materials for mycotoxins that meet the highest standards of quality and precision. These materials allow laboratories to adjust their analytical methods to the new regulation, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and maximum reliability in mycotoxin analysis.
